Good question Mary. My view is, if it,s not broke why try to fix it. I have seen Koi keepers dose there ponds with massive amounts of chemicals just because it,s that time of the month. Effective use of medication is based on correct diagnosis of the illness and I think there is a lot of guesswork by many in treating ill fish. Shot gun approach and incorrect dosing contributes to the development of resistant bacteria then things get real difficult.

Hi All
I have only ever used salt , that's it , and although there are many arguments about using it , that is all i will ever use , i agree with BB if there is an underlying cause it must be addressed not masked by the use of chemicals that's just my two bobs worth

Perhaps I have been fortunate because in 18 years of keeping koi I've never needed to medicate other than a .3% salt treatment (touch wood). ...And in that time I've had my fair share of overstocked and poorly filtered ponds

While on the subject of Koi medication I came across a product called DIMILIN(diflubenzuron). It's used to treat anchor worm, fish lice and flukes. It sounds very safe and is effective in a wide temperature range. Has anyone used this treatment.

Years ago we use to use it. The last time I heard about it, it was banned in Australia.
Also years ago when it was used, it also killed plenty of Koi. It was only safe in the right hands. Give it to somebody that THINKS he has X amount of water in his pond, or THINKS he knows whats wrong with his Koi, then it's a drug that will kill their Koi in a flash, as they most often THOUGHT wrong.
Use it only if you KNOW. Believe me cranky even some experienced Koi keepers still only THINK. The moral is never THINK always KNOW, before using any medication.
