Hey! BB. You need to green up a bit. The secret to build up and stagnation is to keep the water flowing.Change the plants occasionally and if you are chemical free chow down.

I am not going to change the habits of those who like plants in their ponds or filters. I am happy to reveal the water management issues and short comings that come along with that habit. For me the only plants for my ponds are some algae.

Many years ago, I had plants in my filters. I prefer my simpler filtration choice today. It works for me and is not too much work.

Well I thought that I would post a few early photos of my set up.
Other people may have something better but so far the plants are doing fine.

Looks Good Debbie! You and/or your Koi should eat well.

just wondering with your top picture if your pots are getting enough immersion in the water?

Thanks Jayonne,
they are in the water but it doesn't show in the pic.The zeolite and  Kitty litter seem to draw it up as well.
Only just started last weekend so it is interesting to watch.

Beware of some of the chemicals in Kitty litter if they can be released back into the water!

Hi Debbie

there was a trend a couple of years ago to use kitty litter as a filter medium as it is basicly Bentonite Clay. However some people ran into trouble with disinfectants and perfumes in some of the brands of kitty litter.

Here is an extract from the Florida Koi Club:

"Please remember when buying the kitty litter that you are looking for "INGREDIENTS, CLAY" Kitty Litter. In our local PetSmart store in Charleston, WV, there is only one particular kind of kitty litter with the right ingredient, the brand name is Precious Cat but you must read the label, some kinds of Precious Cat kitty litter contains perfumes and the like which you do not want in your koi pond"
