A great looking fish , wish I had it.

I cant see you can call it anything else other than a Ki Showa.

Hi gyzmo

Alot of showa and hi utsuri start off with a yellow or bronze colour. This will later change to orange or red. Only rarely will it remain yellow.

I have posted the photo of this one in my pond before. The colour is yellow. It represents a rather thin colour thickness & somewhat of a poor quality. The colour is thin enough that can see through the yellow and see the skin beneath. Mine became a goshiki showa or perhaps a kage showa in the end - see the insert photo from March 2009. The very earlier versions of showa had a the appearance of yellow with a duller sumi than we see today.

I have a 1yr old Hi Utsuri which started off yellow (looked very similar to your Showa gyzmo) and is now a mid orange just like BB said. Fingers crossed it'll finish blood red.

Hi Gyzmo

I really like the deep yellow, any chance you can net her out and get a better picture?

With my Ki Bekko fry, I have been feeding flake with spirulina and chlorella, and also Hikari mini pellets in the hope of enhancing and setting the colour.Dont know if it works or not but so far they are holding their colour.

Good idea Jayonne,
recently Dick Benbow mentioned the need for colour food in young koi.

Hi Debbie,

Here is an extract from an article I was reading

"Analysis of Spirulina
71% protein, 8% fat, 16% carbohydrate, plus vitamins, a chlorophyll and carotenoid. Sprirulina was found to have a higher protein content, better digestibility and had other ingredients good for Koi, compared to Chlorella another algae used as Koi food. Spirulina is also easy to cultivate and harvest.

Algae – Spirulina – Main carotenoid ingredient – Zeaxanthin
Algae – Chlorella – Main carotenoid ingredient – Lutein.

In a test on Goldfish, redness can be divided into two main colour pigments. Astacanthin for red and Lutein for yellow. It was found that Zeaxanthin became the red colour pigment Astaxanthin. Lutein or yellow colour pigment will not change to Astaxanthin. The test showed that the red colour on the Goldfish or Koi is Astaxanthin. Zeaxanthin enters the fish body and becomes Astaxanthin.

Spirulina has a large content of Zeaxanthin, which becomes the red pigment Astaxanthin. It was thought that Spirulina would have a positive effect on the colour of Nishikigooi. Dr. Hiroshi Yasumasa at the University of Tokyo performed a test in which Lutein and Zeaxanothin with Astacanthin were mixed with Koi food and fed for 35 days. The results are as follows:

The experiment showed that Zeaxanthin (Astaxanthin) heightens not only red colour but also the white colour. In Japan, there is a place called Ishiwa, which is well known for the beautifully coloured Koi. Recent research has shown that the reason for the colour heightened Koi was the presence of algae, which is similar to Spirulina, upon which the Koi fed. Further research will be conducted to verify this fact."

I find you have to feed it first up or they wont touch it, it must taste pretty awful.

Yes it is a nice little koi Gyzmo.

I used to add it to oatmeal, made up,or moist pellets. It tends to dissolve in water anyway.

I guess that I had better use it. Grin
